Recommended Summer Activities from a High Schooler

By Dhwani Desai

Summer. It can be quite uneventful if you have nothing planned out. Today, I wanted to share a couple activities you could engage in to make summer just a bit less boring for you!

Learn a new hobby

I don't know how to do many things outside of school, so this summer I'm learning crochet and how to play the piano. So far, its been a fantastic journey and I can't wait to see how I improve with more practice. Of course, you can learn how to play other instruments, start journaling, art, or a new skincare routine! If the environment outside your house is calming and scenic, you can go for a bike ride or a stroll in the park too! (Also taking into account the weather, as Houston heat absolutely sucks)

Learn a new language

Languages are simply words and sounds people use to communicate in their daily lives. The more you know in a language, the easier it is to communicate with someone. Plus, it makes you feel more knowledgable :) Spanish, for example, is a very important second language to learn if you plan on learning any new language, as around 41.7 million people in the United States speak it and because it is the second official language of the United States. Of course, if you live in a country where another language is prevalant, go ahead and learn that! Learning the native language of an area opens a whole new span of possibilities for you! If you are interested, check out our past blog on how to learn a language effectively.

Explore your surroundings!

Traveling to other countries with friends and family, or even heading out to a nearby park or food chain is a great way to pass time over summer! It is also a great way to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Just grab that phone thats right next to you (No, I'm not stalking you) and search up some cool places nearby that you never knew existed. For example, a nearby museum, art gallery, or restaurant. Whatever the case, you should definitely consider this as an option for summer activities, as it will also get you to step out of your house and explore!

Try new foods!

Everyone loves food, am I right? It is the hearth of many cultures, and there are so many cuisines with delicious and easy to make food, so why not try it out? There are so many varieties and flavors to try that are easy to make at home with the correct ingredients. Some popular cultural food that I see trending currently are birria tacos, Indian food, Chinese food, tteok-bokk, fufu with egos soup, and a LOT more delicious and scrumptious-looking food. You’d not only get to experience new tastes, but you’d also gain some experience making the meals and would get to spend time with family if you all make the food together.

Adapt to lifestyle choices

New lifestyle choices include adding a face care routine before going to bed, making sure to wear sunscreen more often, exercising frequently, or doing flexibility exercises to ease the pain a little when you grow older. Basically, healthy changes to your life that you haven’t been doing, felt like doing, or haven’t had enough time to do, now is the time to enforce these new rules into your life and see how it changes you for the better.

Conclusion

Overall, summer can be boring, but it doesn’t have to be. There are thousands of things you can do and thousands of things you can learn. Just remember to have fun while you’re doing so. You only live once, make the most out of life and free summers. Once you get a job you won’t have time to relax during the summer because you’d be working. Don’t take this extra time for granted. Whether you spend your summers being productive or doing nothing at all, this is entirely your choice. Just make sure you’re loving life and being you.

The Power of Positive Pondering

By Dhwani Desai There are two types of people in the world- pessimists and optimists. Pessimists think negatively, always anticipating the bad, while optimists think positively, of the good to come. I, myself, am a pessimist, but often, optimistic thinking overtakes the gloominess,  and it honestly makes my existence in this world a little more tolerable. Of course, no scientific theory states that being positive is beneficial, but I like to think that you often manifest  what you believe. Science Fair Plant Experiment I’m sure you’ve heard of the experiment where two plants are in the same environment and given the same amount of water, but one is praised while the other is scolded and reprimanded. Upon doing some research, it’s actually the vibrations of negative words that affect the plants badly. To sum it up, bad words have bad vibrations that cause the plant to wilt, whereas good words have good vibrations that cause the plant to prosper. I think positivity is a lot like this i

Subject Series- How to Effectively Study for Science

By Shreya Deo Science. You either love it or you hate it, am I right? But knowing how to effectively study serves as the bridge to connect what you have to do and what you want to do. Just reading a chapter, watching an Amoeba Sisters video, or listening to your teacher explain it to you are very important building blocks to gain an introductory level of understanding of the topic, but are often the most boring to students today. We are often distracted by external factors and don't get work done. To tackle this, I have come up with a few techniques that I use solely for science (in my case, biology) to master the subject and score well on tests. Mindset Mindset is key to mastering a subject, whether it be science, math, social studies, or the arts. We never start of perfect at a subject. There is always a graph that everyone goes through. We start of average, then we suddenly dip for what seems like the longest time, and then, for the few of us that get back out of it, we start

Embracing Your Culture- How to Develop a Sense of Belonging

By Shreya Deo  Today's topic is slightly different than what we have discussed in the past few articles. Usually, we talk about study tips to make student life a bit easier, but today, I wanted to talk about something that I consider an integral part of life- embracing your culture. You may think that this has nothing to do with study tips or tricks to make school easier, but somewhere, it links with your mental state and how you perceive the world around you. Religion, culture, nationality, ethnicity. These are the terms people use to identify themselves, however, do we really stay true to our values and teachings? Or do we simply believe in something because we have to? Before I start today's article, I'd like to say that I am not at all religious or spiritual. I am also a teenager who has adapted to the modern world around me, just like the tons of other teens. However, the reason that I felt the need to write this article is because of the changes I have seen around me
