Recommended Summer Activities from a High Schooler

By Dhwani Desai

Summer. It can be quite uneventful if you have nothing planned out. Today, I wanted to share a couple activities you could engage in to make summer just a bit less boring for you!

Learn a new hobby

I don't know how to do many things outside of school, so this summer I'm learning crochet and how to play the piano. So far, its been a fantastic journey and I can't wait to see how I improve with more practice. Of course, you can learn how to play other instruments, start journaling, art, or a new skincare routine! If the environment outside your house is calming and scenic, you can go for a bike ride or a stroll in the park too! (Also taking into account the weather, as Houston heat absolutely sucks)

Learn a new language

Languages are simply words and sounds people use to communicate in their daily lives. The more you know in a language, the easier it is to communicate with someone. Plus, it makes you feel more knowledgable :) Spanish, for example, is a very important second language to learn if you plan on learning any new language, as around 41.7 million people in the United States speak it and because it is the second official language of the United States. Of course, if you live in a country where another language is prevalant, go ahead and learn that! Learning the native language of an area opens a whole new span of possibilities for you! If you are interested, check out our past blog on how to learn a language effectively.

Explore your surroundings!

Traveling to other countries with friends and family, or even heading out to a nearby park or food chain is a great way to pass time over summer! It is also a great way to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Just grab that phone thats right next to you (No, I'm not stalking you) and search up some cool places nearby that you never knew existed. For example, a nearby museum, art gallery, or restaurant. Whatever the case, you should definitely consider this as an option for summer activities, as it will also get you to step out of your house and explore!

Try new foods!

Everyone loves food, am I right? It is the hearth of many cultures, and there are so many cuisines with delicious and easy to make food, so why not try it out? There are so many varieties and flavors to try that are easy to make at home with the correct ingredients. Some popular cultural food that I see trending currently are birria tacos, Indian food, Chinese food, tteok-bokk, fufu with egos soup, and a LOT more delicious and scrumptious-looking food. You’d not only get to experience new tastes, but you’d also gain some experience making the meals and would get to spend time with family if you all make the food together.

Adapt to lifestyle choices

New lifestyle choices include adding a face care routine before going to bed, making sure to wear sunscreen more often, exercising frequently, or doing flexibility exercises to ease the pain a little when you grow older. Basically, healthy changes to your life that you haven’t been doing, felt like doing, or haven’t had enough time to do, now is the time to enforce these new rules into your life and see how it changes you for the better.

Conclusion

Overall, summer can be boring, but it doesn’t have to be. There are thousands of things you can do and thousands of things you can learn. Just remember to have fun while you’re doing so. You only live once, make the most out of life and free summers. Once you get a job you won’t have time to relax during the summer because you’d be working. Don’t take this extra time for granted. Whether you spend your summers being productive or doing nothing at all, this is entirely your choice. Just make sure you’re loving life and being you.

How to Overcome Exam Anxiety

By Shreya Deo Being a student comes with many pros and cons, no doubt. But one of the biggest points of concern that has been more prominent amongst students in higher grade levels is exam stress and anxiety. Anxiety is one thing that only happens to some people, but exam anxiety can hit anyone at any point of time in their schooling. That's why, today, I wanted to talk a little bit about how to prevent exam anxiety and stress. Ever since I entered middle school, I always had a worrying factor at least once a week- tests and quizzes. I was always well prepared, but the underlying fear of getting a bad grade used to hit hard. The moments before a test, even while knowing all the material, I used to frantically re-read my extensively detailed notes. (It never really made a difference, though, because I knew what the material was. It was only for the satisfaction that my eyes had seen the notes at least once before the test.) But during the test, I used to breeze through it and even...

How to Strengthen Your College Applications at a Young Age

By Shreya Deo College applications. They only really start to matter to people in junior year, right? But knowing the right path to make your college applications well formed from an early age will save you a lot of time and effort when it comes to actually applying. I would like to mention that this blog is not written from personal experience, as I am in 10th grade, but it is made up of all the people I have spoken to over the last year, along with teachers and parents.  Introduction College applications, if you think about it, are the final stage of your schooling, after all the studying you have been doing since you entered elementary school. Before submitting your application, you technically have 12 school years to make your application as dense and strong as possible. In today's blog, I wanted to share some tips I have been given that can help you make the years leading up to junior year productive and useful for college. The importance of choosing the right classes G...

Embracing Your Culture- How to Develop a Sense of Belonging

By Shreya Deo  Today's topic is slightly different than what we have discussed in the past few articles. Usually, we talk about study tips to make student life a bit easier, but today, I wanted to talk about something that I consider an integral part of life- embracing your culture. You may think that this has nothing to do with study tips or tricks to make school easier, but somewhere, it links with your mental state and how you perceive the world around you. Religion, culture, nationality, ethnicity. These are the terms people use to identify themselves, however, do we really stay true to our values and teachings? Or do we simply believe in something because we have to? Before I start today's article, I'd like to say that I am not at all religious or spiritual. I am also a teenager who has adapted to the modern world around me, just like the tons of other teens. However, the reason that I felt the need to write this article is because of the changes I have seen around me ...
